As before, walking a certain distance (1km, 3km, 5km or 20km, depending on rarity) will get candies, and this still works outside of the Buddy system, meaning you don't need to have them on the map in 'Adventure Mode' for this to work if you forget to feed them regularly.

You can also switch between multiple friends (up to 20) per day, allowing you to get the above perks on multiple Pokemon.

How to play and feed your buddy in Pokémon Go

Let's start with the basics. To play with your friend in Pokémon Go, make sure you are the first trainer level 2 and have a friend assigned to you, then tap the friend icon in the lower left corner of the screen next to your trainer profile.

Then press the Play! button. button. Your phone's camera will be activated. If you are in AR mode, find a flat surface. Aim at it until yellow footprints appear, then press .

If it then says you are too close to your mate, take a step or two back and it should appear.

If you're having trouble, remember that you can turn off AR mode in Settings so that the Pokémon will just appear on the screen.

With the Pokémon visible, you can play by rubbing it. You can also feed it by pressing the Berry icon.

Unlike the catch phase where you simply touch the berries, on the Buddy screen they have to be thrown like a Pokéball into your Buddy's mouth. You won't lose your Berry if you fail though, so keep trying!

Once fully fed, they will join you on an adventure where they can start earning hearts for the day…

How to join your friend on the map and go on an adventure in Pokémon Go

To earn hearts from your companion from certain activities, such as walking or fighting together, they must be visible on the map screen in 'Adventure' mode. They will then walk, fly or roll with you as you explore for a limited time.

In order for them to appear on the map screen, make sure they are fully powered.

Give your buddy some berries (three regular berries will do) and their mood will improve, telling you they've been with you on an adventure.

They will join you on the map for about three hours and a hunger indicator will appear around their icon next to the Trainer button in the lower left corner.

Feel free to refill the meter with berries as you play, or just wait until it's completely depleted before feeding them again.

Keep in mind that if you switch between friends, your hunger meter will be completely depleted, so you will have to feed them again. While this sounds frustrating, one benefit is that you'll be able to get them back to feeding faster if you switch back and forth and earn some quick and easy hearts.

This is how your buddy 'starts' with or without Poffin in Pokémon Go

When in Adventure mode, doing activities with Buddies boosts their mood. The highest mood, 'excited', can also give you benefits for a limited time.

When your friend is "excited", as indicated by a cheer icon surrounded by hearts, they will receive the following benefits:

  • Candy distances will be halved.
  • Your daily limit of hearts has been increased to 20

An exciting Pokémon therefore has its advantages. To excite him there are two methods:

To make a Pokémon "Excited", you can:

  • Use the Poffin, a shop exclusive item that you can buy in the shop for 100 coins, which also fills all power heart gauges throughout the day.
  • Take enough actions to reach a certain threshold

Although the second is 'free', it is neither easy nor particularly obvious from the start. You must accumulate 32 'points' from doing multiple activities, but you can't do them all at once - each activity has a cooldown of 30 minutes, with the exception of walking.

Here are the points you get from each activity (thanks to reddit's 7Kushi for the image below):

Some clarifications on the above, thanks to TheTraveller on reddit: You can get more battle points in half an hour if you fight in different ways (Trainer Battle, Team Rocket Grunt Battle, Team Rocket Leader Battle, Gym Battle or Raid) and Souvenirs, Gifts and visiting new stops has no cooldown, just like walking.

It's also important to note that with the introduction of Season of Celebrations on Tuesday, December 1st, the number of hearts you can earn daily by battling has increased to three.

On top of this, there is also a 1 point drop every 30 minutes, but every time you do an activity (even if it's the same one you did previously), it resets.

And when you're excited, it will take about the same time as feeding your Buddy (three hours) and you'll have to keep doing things to keep it going.

Needless to say, Poffin is the fastest way to start this, which unfortunately, but understandably, is also the monized option. Getting your friend excited is great for events like Community Day, and while ironically the amount of activity you're forced to subject your friend to during the event is the most likely chance you'll naturally get them excited, so is our recommendation to buy a Poffin and use it in advance if you can save the coins; that way you get the benefits right away.

How to get hearts and increase your Buddy level in Pokémon Go

There are a number of daily interactions you can perform with your Buddy, each of which gives you hearts. Hearts can help you unlock the "excited" mood for that day, as well as help you increase your Buddy level.

You can earn up to 10 hearts per day (or 20 when you're "excited") by doing the following activities:

Please note that your friend must be in adventure mode for this to count. So, for example, if you jump into AR mode and play with them before feeding them to show them on the map, you won't get a heart for that action.

Earning a number of hearts will increase your level. Here are all the levels, their benefits and how many days it takes to get to them:
